What is the book about?
Sensemaking is the counterargument to the Moneyball approach to business. If you are not familiar Moneyball was an Oscar winning film about how a lowly baseball team accelerated through the ranks to win the World Series. They did it by focusing on statistics that each individual player could deliver. This led to the quintessential ‘greater than the sum of it’s parts’ story.
But business in not baseball.
In Sensemaking Christian Madsbjerg argues that relying too heavily on pure data analytics to solve our problems is going to create more than it solves. In Silicon Valley there seems to be no room for human intuition or ‘gut-feeling’. If it cannot be measured it is an error in the system, a fly in the ointment. He puts forward the theory that too many companies have leaned too heavily on the algorithm and ignored the humanity of their customer. It this book Madsbjerg sets out five principles that can be used to implement what he calls ‘Sensemaking’.
