A company president came to Covey because he felt there was a lack of cooperation between the members of his management team. They seemed to be pulling against one another rather than pulling together and this was losing the company money.
Covey went to investigate and discovered that in the president’s office was a chart with race horses all racing towards a picture of Bermuda. Over each horse’s head was a picture of a manager.
The problem was blindingly obvious. The managers were competing against one another rather than cooperating with one another because there was a trip to Bermuda at stake. One managers failure was another managers success, so why would they work together?
Covey believes that If you are in a position of leadership you should promote the exact opposite of a competitive environment you need to create one of cooperation. Where people are interdependent rather than independent, this is the win/win mentality.
